When a journalist is killed, the truth is also taken at gunpoint.
We condemn the killing of radio broadcaster Noel Bellen Samar who was fatally shot Monday morning in Brgy. Guinobatan, Albay, and was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon. We also stand in solidarity with his family, friends and colleagues who now bear the weight of this unjust loss.
Samar was the eighth journalist killed under the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
This adds to the growing list of media workers whose killings remain unresolved. Each name testifies to why the Philippines remains among the most dangerous countries for journalists.
We call on the state to dismantle the climate of impunity that enables this violence. We urge them to investigate the motivation behind this killing and hold its perpetrators accountable until justice is served.
To let these killings continue is to accept the death of press freedom itself.
