active rebuilding (12)

Report by Andrea Patrice Alinea

Impulse is one of the student publications of the UP College of Engineering (ENGG). With its last release dating back to 2023, the publication is currently inactive with plans of revival.

Formerly known as Logscript, Impulse is recognized by the Engineering Student Council (ESC) Constitution. The publication has since operated under the student council, which has made multiple revival attempts in the past years.

In a written statement, ESC Vice Chairperson Angel Lopez attributed Impulse’s inactivity to a lack of members and a clear line of succession.

In 2025, the ESC recruited more than 40 interested publication volunteers, with at least 20 proceeding to cover the Sept. 21 Martial Law protests. However, the effort was not sustained, according to Lopez.

Because of Impulse’s inactivity, its recognition and funding hang in limbo.

“The administration is supportive of the reestablishment, but the bottleneck is really on the council’s effort to put hands on deck for the revival. […] From what we know, the former publication had no funds and no formal office. So definitely, the funding and logistical support shall also be pushed alongside the recognition,” Lopez said.

One of the major steps ESC has been taking in rebuilding the publication is to kickstart the application and reestablish an editorial board.

With interested staff members and editorial board applicants, the ESC hopes to successfully revive Impulse, although Lopez said that the process remains difficult due to the current political climate and other issues facing the council.
